Guide to Researching a Term Paper

This guide provides an introduction to basic sources for researching a term paper. This guide is intended for use at Hardin-Simmons University Libraries, however, most of the listed items will be available at other academic libraries.

Look ahead!
Good research takes time. Begin with a clear understanding of the assignment. Know what documentation is required by your professor. The library owns circulating and reference copies of several accepted term paper manuals which may help you:

Ask a librarian. Let a professional outline a research strategy and help to identify appropriate reference books and periodical indexes. Research steps should be taken from the general to the specific.

Use background articles to begin research.
Sources for general information:
  • Encyclopedias (Ref. AE 5).
  • Reference books (search the ALCON terminal using the specific topic or under a more general area. Example: "Education - Encyclopedia" for physical education topics).

Examine background articles to find:
General overview of the topic.
  • How the topic relates to other subjects.
  • Issues of prime importance to the topic.
  • Unique terminology.
  • Authorities in the field.
  • Names of people who are involved with the subject.

Identify sources that lead to good references.
Bibliographies (printed lists of citations on a topic).
  • Sources printed at the end of the background articles.
  • Bibliography Index Per. Index Z 1002 .B594:
  • Bibliographies listed in ALCON under the topic. Example: Religion - Bibliographies.
Periodical Indexes:
  • Use the library guide, "Periodical Indexes".
  • Ask a librarian to identify important indexes.
U.S. Government Documents:
  • Government Publications Index (3rd floor indexes).
  • GPO Subject Bibliographies or Monthly Catalog (Docs. Ref.).
  • Use the library guide, "United States Government Documents".
Online Databases
(Search bibliographic databases listed on menu to locate additional articles, books, or newspaper reports.)

Locate the identified sources.
Periodicals:
  • Look for articles on the major issues.
  • Identify additional articles cited in good articles or books already identified.
  • For scholarly topics, use professional journals rather than popular magazines.
  • Use ALCON or the Abilene Library Consortium Union List of Serials to identify which library in Abilene holds the title you need.
  • HSU periodicals are located on 3rd floor and arranged alphabetically by title. Periodical location guides are available on 1st and 3rd floors.
Books:
  • Use the ALCON terminal to find call numbers.
  • Use LC Subject Headings, located near the Circulation Desk, to identify appropriate subject terms to use for subject searches.
  • Use author-title searches to locate the sources already identified from the background articles and appropriate bibliographies.
Government Documents:
  • Use the SuDoc call numbers from the Government Publications Index to locate items in the third floor documents collection.
  • Use specialized reference sources such as Subject Bibliographies or the Monthly Catalog for additional items.
Other Sources:
  • Students may use Abilene Public, Abilene Christian University, or McMurry libraries.
  • The library will attempt to borrow cited materials from other libraries if they are not available in Abilene. Interlibrary loan forms for borrowing such materials are available at the circulation desk. Undergraduates' requests must be signed by a p

Evaluate your sources in relation to your topic.
Sources checklist:
  • Do your sources cover all the major issues?
  • Are enough sources available?
  • Are the sources recent enough to be relevant?
  • Are the sources authoritative, objective and on an appropriate academic level?
Printed reviews and criticism of major sources:
  • Book Review Digest (Ref Z 1219 .C94 1905-).
  • Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews (Ref Z 1035 .A1 .C64 1886-1974).
  • Periodical indexes (third floor index area) and on ALCON.
Biographical information about major authors cited:
  • Biographical and Genealogy Index (R.Ref. Z5305.U5.B57).
  • Directory of American Scholars (Ref LA 2311 .C32.).
  • Biography Index (Per. Index Z 5301 .B5).
  • Use the library handout: "Biographical Guide".
You may wish to review your research with a reference librarian and your professor who may be able to suggest other sources.
