THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

The Rupert and Pauline Richardson Library and the Smith Music Library in Caldwell Hall provide the materials necessary to support the curriculum and provide for the general reading of students and faculty at Hardin-Simmons University.

Library Resources – The HSU library online catalog and databases are available 24/7 from the university webpage. The HSU Libraries own more than 320,000 items. The library subscribes to 525 print journals, 35,000 electronic journals, and over 100 databases. An extensive collection of 1,650,000 items are accessible locally through the Abilene Library Consortium joint catalog of the collections of HSU, Abilene Christian University, McMurry University, Howard Payne University, and Abilene Public Library. The Libraries make available materials from across the state as well as world-wide through TexShare membership and Interlibrary Loan services. Weekday courier deliveries make accessing materials statewide quick and easy.

Special Collections - The library provides opportunity for special research needs through several collections open to the university community, and to local and visiting scholars or others who have special interests. Most of our special collections are located in

The Research Center for the Southwest.

Additional collections include the Clayton Collection in Philosophy which consists of 2,600 volumes primarily in the areas of history of philosophy, philosophy of religion, and Christian theology. The H. Leon McBeth Collection is comprised of approximately 3,000 monographs. This collection is primarily composed of volumes in the areas of Baptist heritage, beliefs and polity as well as general church history. The Lonnie D. Kliever Collection includes approximately 1000 volumes in the areas of philosophy, ethics, world religions, and philosophy of religion.

Government Documents - The library is designated as a depository for selected federal government publications, receiving annually about 3,000 items. Approximately 100,000 documents are now housed in the University library, and they represent a rich storehouse of information on virtually every subject of current interest. Internet access to government websites expands document availability.

Cooper Education Library - In addition to the above, the main library’s third floor houses a collection of curriculum materials consisting of over 20,000 items. Among these are state adopted textbooks, curriculum guides and other teaching aids, teaching units, children’s literature and books relating to the theory and practice of education.

Educational Technology Services - Housed in the main library, ETS provides for an integrated learning resource system by allowing innovative approaches to classroom instruction. It contains a library of films, DVDs, videos, recordings and other materials, and the necessary equipment for playback. In addition, computer supported presentation software is available for faculty use in the Technology Learning Center.

Smith Music Library - The Smith Music Library in Caldwell Hall contains study scores, collected works of various composers, recordings, and a strong collection of music books, scores, and reference materials. Listening equipment is provided, and the library houses most of the taped concerts and recitals of the School of Music.
